Grade 9 Project - complete!

As of October 31st, the final lessons and webinars have now been posted and are available to all from the OntarioMath.support website. A huge thank you goes out to all who were involved in the creation and editing of these resources. In total there are 26 lessons (available in English or French) as well as 7 webinars for viewing on demand (with captioning available, and support documents containing all links referenced in that particular webinar).

Three more lessons added for Grade 9

The three most recently added grade 9 lessons:

"How's It Growing? Using Visual Patterns to Explore Algebraic Relationships" allows students to see how the way visual patterns are growing can be interpreted in different ways and how each different way connects to an algebraic representation. They will then learn how to show that all the representations are equivalent.

In the lesson "Aiming into the Box", by looking at data around us, such as sports statistics and news reports, students will explore different ways to represent, analyse, and understand data, including quartile values and box plots.

In the lesson "How Many Equations Can a Line Possibly Have?" students will make connections between algebraic models of linear equations and their representations (graph/table of values/pattern), and describe the effect of the representations when an equation is manipulated or changed in different ways.

Three new lessons added for Grade 9

Three news lessons were recently posted:

"Finding Infinity" introduces students to relations of the form x + y = k, 2x + 2y = k and xy = k and uses these graphs as a platform to explain infinity and density. Throughout the lesson students will create graphs, both by hand and using technology, and will strengthen their understanding of how to use lines and/or curves of best fit to uncover information about the relation.

In the lesson "Exploring the History of Mathematics" students are given a chance to develop their research skills by working in groups to investigate the history of fractions. By completing this scaffolded lesson, students will be more prepared to engage in individual research on a mathematical concept of their choice.

In the lesson "Everything Is Not As It Seems!" students will identify linear and non-linear relationships in a variety of contexts. Students will determine characteristics of linear and non-linear relationships in multiple representations.

Another Webinar / Another Lesson

Another webinar is now open for registration: "Course Planning" will be presented on Aug 30th and Sept 1st and will introduce Ontario educators to three (3) course plans, each of which outlines a different way a teacher could structure the 2021 Grade 9 math course.

In the lesson "The Crow and the Pitcher", students will use algebra and coding to solve problems involving measurement and, in doing so, will develop problem-solving strategies. To simulate the story told in the fable, students will gather data, and will later develop an algebraic model and test their model. Students will consolidate strategies for problem solving. Finally, they will test their strategies with a new dunk tank challenge.
 

Two more lessons posted for Grade 9

Two more lessons were recently posted: "How Many Ways Can You Divide An Inch?" introduces students to the concept of density as it relates to the rational numbers, while also exploring patterns with fractions and powers through the lens of an Imperial ruler. In the lesson "Future Trends in Climate Change Data" students will use Canadian CO2 Emissions Data to determine trends and make predictions for the future - if nothing is done and if we adopt emissions reduction strategies.

Sign up on the Webinars page for this webinar, which will be presented Aug 25th and 26th. In this webinar about the transition from the revised elementary mathematics curriculum (2020) to the newly revised Grade 9 mathematics curriculum (2021), participants will receive specific information about the alignment of expectations for grades 7, 8, and 9. They will also receive guidance on approaches to course planning as well as lesson and assessment planning. References and resources available to support teachers will be shared. A Question and Answer period will be included in this webinar.

Grade 9 Math Curriculum announced

The official curriculum for the newly revised destreamed Grade 9 math course is now available. The DCP (digital curriculum platform) website features videos as well as links to details about the strands and organization of the new math course. The link to the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum, 2021, Grade 9 can be found on the Curriculum Supports page.
 

All Subject Webinars now available!

The final set of subject webinars are now posted. That completes the set for Mathematical Modelling and Financial Literacy so they, along with Fractions and Coding, each have a webinar for each of the Primary, Junior and Intermediate divisions.

Another Round of Webinars and Recordings!

The first set of Fractions Webinars (for Primary grades) and Mathematical Modelling (for Intermediate grades) is now over. The recording of the premieres of those webinars is now available in the Webinars section of this website. The Financial Literacy premiere webinar (for Junior grades) will be made available after the final repeat is done on Tuesday.

In the meantime, a new round has started up - so sign up today for more webinars based on the lessons created for this project.
 

All Lesson and Assessment Plans now Posted!

All of the Lesson and Assessment Plans in the four areas of focus have now been posted, for grades one to eight. Each grade has thirteen lessons (a couple actually have a bonus lesson, or a two-parter masquerading as a singleton). A huge thanks to the writers and reviewers who took on this Herculean task.

Coding Webinars available

The Coding Webinars for the Primary Grades and for the Junior Grades are now available. The recordings are of the core portion of the Webinars, but does NOT include the Q&A portion. A fuller version of each webinar, complete with a compilation of the Q&A portions from all 4 nights, and captioning, will be posted as soon as it is available.

Registration is now open for the Webinars based on the Lesson and Assessment plans focussed on Coding. The series will start with a Webinar whose focus is Coding in the Primary Grades, premiering on Thursday February 11th. After the Primary webinars are done, they will be followed by a webinar on Coding in the Junior Grades, and finally Coding in the Intermediate Grades. Register on the Webinars page.
 

More Lessons posted

All four subject areas of focus for the project, now have lessons posted for each grade, from grade 1 to grade 8. The Coding lessons are complete, as previously reported, and a number of Financial Literacy lessons have also been completed. New to some grades is now at least one Numbers lesson, with a focus on Fractions, and also at least one Mathematical Modelling lesson.

Over the last week we posted the first set of lessons and assessment plans. The Coding lessons for Grades 1 to 8 are now available, in English and French. There are also a few Financial Literacy lessons that tie in with a Coding lesson included. More lessons will continue to be uploaded over time.

Eight lessons are now available, four in English, four in French, for Grade 3 teachers. The focus of these lessons is Coding. One of these is a follow-up to a Financial Literacy lesson which will be released soon. Stay tuned for more lessons to be released in the coming weeks. The Google Slide presentations for the first three Curriculum Context webinars are now available. Also, the webinars for those three (in English) now contain closed captioning. The captions have just been added for Webinars # 2 and # 3 today.

Note: These captions are turned off by default, but can be turned on if needed by clicking on the 3 dots setting button.
